‘Nox’ is an unforgettable work by this year’s literature laureate Anne Carson
Canadian writer and poet Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy praised her for an audacious, imaginative body of work that playfully engages with classical traditions to forge fresh pathways for modern literature.
According to the award-giving body, Carson was honored “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”
Speaking about Carson’s work, she was known for blending prose, verse, dialogue and translation in a genre-defying mix.
Her translations of classical Greek literature also speak volumes of her work ranging from “opera libretti to literary criticism and verse novels including, Autobiography of Red from 1998.”
"She has herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point for all her work. Her translations from Classical Greek may be regarded as independent works in their own right,” the Academy said in a statement.
Carson’s style is specifically documented in Norma Jeane Baker of Troy from 2019, which is the story of Helen of Troy with Marilyn Monroe.
Anne Carson joins notable figures like Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro, Ernest Hemingway, and Laszlo Krasznahorkai as a recipient of the award.
In 2025, the award was given to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai.
