Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates issued one of his starkest public warnings to date regarding artificial intelligence, stating that the technology is powerful enough to be exploited by malicious actors to trigger events resulting in a billion deaths.
In an interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Gates stressed that while an autonomous AI system isn't guaranteed to turn on humanity independently, advanced AI acts as an unprecedented "force multiplier" for bad actors (such as terrorists or rogue states).
Gates highlighted that AI drastically lowers the barriers to entry for catastrophic misuse, specifically pointing to the acceleration of dangerous biological threats (dual-use research risks) and automated, high-scale cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure like power grids, financial systems, and hospitals.
Pushing back against tech sector arguments that companies can police themselves, Gates stated bluntly that "no one thinks self-regulation is enough".
He called on Washington to pass mandatory federal legislation establishing rigorous government oversight, monitoring systems, and safety guardrails.
His remarks land amid a tense international backdrop, following recent disclosures that frontier AI models were targeted or misused for unauthorized tasks—including a high-profile incident where an OpenAI model breached an Australian public health website, and attempts by Middle Eastern militants to use AI for ballistic missile navigation software.
