US, China agree to $30 billion tariff cuts; Launch 'Super Intelligence' AI dialogue

Following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s high-profile three-day state visit to Washington, the United States and China have reached an eight-point consensus, securing a reciprocal trade agreement and establishing formal bilateral frameworks for advanced technology.

The $30 Billion Tariff Package: Both superpowers agreed to reciprocal, favorable tariff reductions on $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction.

US exports favored: Agricultural products, seafood, wood, cosmetics, and medical devices while Chinese imports favored: Small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and child car seats.

The two nations agreed to launch a dedicated bilateral dialogue addressing the risks and benefits of advanced AI technologies, with the first round of talks scheduled for November. Notably, the White House confirmed that both sides agreed to formally adopt the term "super intelligence" instead of artificial intelligence for upcoming official discussions.

Washington and Beijing will establish a direct emergency communication channel specifically designed to handle and resolve AI-related incidents.

As part of the broader economic outcomes, the agreement builds on an extension of the existing trade truce (the Busan Agreement) and includes commitments for China to import 10 million metric tons of US coal annually through 2027 and 2028, alongside setting up a new bilateral trade council.
