Putin gives blunt response when asked if he is ‘jealous’ of Trump-Xi summit

The Russian president Vladimir Putin has responded bluntly to a question on whether he is “jealous” of the Trump-Xi summit held in Washington on September 24.

The Chinese leader recently concluded a three-day visit to the United States on Friday after bilateral talks aimed at discussing wide-ranging issues such as trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence and geopolitical conflicts.

At a press conference on the sidelines of the United Cultures Forum in St, Petersburg, Putin was asked his views about the meeting of Chinese President Xi with Trump or if he was jealous of the US meeting.

Putin responded, “Jealousy is something from a completely different area of a humanitarian nature—relationships between men and women. In politics, in international politics, such categories are not really used.”

“We welcome negotiations between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. Why? Because these are the two largest economies in the world.”

However, the Russian president cast doubt on whether he would attend the upcoming APEC summit in China but he intends to, noting that domestic developments would dictate his travel plans.

"I intend to take part in this work…. I repeat once again, ultimately [the decision on participation] will depend on the situation inside Russia," Putin told reporters.

The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen, China, from November 18 to 19, 2026.
