Japan’s vacant home problem grows amid record population decline: What to know

In a recent update, Japan is facing expanding housing vacancies as its population continues to decline with around 9 million homes reportedly standing empty- fueling broader research highlighting the country’s extensive demographic and housing constraints.

According to Japan’s 2023 Housing and Land survey, nearly 9 million vacant homes, 13.8% of all dwellings, have doubled since 1993.

The population primarily dropped 3.1 million from 2020 to 2025 now at 123.05 million with deaths outpacing births by over 900,000 yearly and a fertility rate of 1.2.

In contrast, rural areas suffer the most as elderly owners pass away heavily burdened by legal or financial liabilities while the government offers low-interest loans to convert these properties into family rentals.

On social platform X, users have been responding with one writing, “ Makes sense, hopefully the West can take note and realize they're taking advantage of people having children to run society and making the public balance on a tightrope whilst they live lavish lives.”

The second said, “ Are these homes sitting vacant because of the supposed low birth rate, or is it an issue of affordability where the younger generation simply cannot afford to purchase these properties despite the apparent supply.”

Third added, “ As they say, progress and development kill the population, poverty and tradition feed it.”
