Zelenskyy sees China as key to Trump’s Russia-Ukraine peace efforts

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signalled the possibility of new Russia-Ukraine peace talks with mediation of the United States and China.

On Friday, Zelenskyy said the US has proposed a trilateral meeting between Moscow and Kyiv with officials holding technical talks in that format without the countries’ leaders, to resume peace talks and discuss efforts to end their four-and-a-half-year war. The meeting is planned to be hosted by the UAE.

"The American ‌side has proposed... meeting at a technical level in a three-way format," Zelenskyy told reporters in a briefing.

According to the Ukrainian leader he has asked President Trump to seek China’s help in ending this years-long conflict as Beijing holds significant diplomatic influence over Moscow. As per Zelenskyy he has not yet received any update over Trump-Xi talks over Russia-Ukraine conflict.

NATO countries have called China a “decisive enabler” of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

As per officials, Ukraine awaits scheduling from the United States regarding upcoming discussions, for which the UAE has been proposed as the location.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed arranging a face-to-face meeting during their phone call earlier this month, though he noted that no specific details have been finalized yet.
