Carney reveals Canada has examined risk of US military action under Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has examined the possibility of US-led military action against the country, describing the scenario as an “extreme tail risk.”
In an interview with the New York Times, Carney said the possibility was unlikely but significant enough that failing to prepare would be irresponsible.
“I think you have a responsibility in these roles to look at extreme tail risk. That’s just risk management. That’s not a base case, but it would be irresponsible not to” prepare, Carney told the Times.
The newspaper asked Carney about preparations for a potential US military invasion, but he did not use the word “invasion” himself or provide details about any measures Canada had taken.
Trump has repeatedly discussed making Canada the 51st US state. He previously ruled out using military force to annex Canada while saying he could use “economic force.”
On Wednesday, Trump also criticised Canada’s immigration policies, claiming on Truth Social that the country was “destroying itself.”
Carney and Trump were both in New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly but did not meet.
