Kamala Harris rallies behind progressive Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan Senate battle
El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat, is facing Republican former congressman Mike Rogers in November
Former US Vice President Kamala Harris will campaign in Michigan on Tuesday to support Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed as the party fights to retain a crucial seat.
Harris will appear at events in Detroit aimed at building support among Black voters, reported the Associated Press.
She is expected to join El-Sayed for a roundtable on Black maternal health and attend a separate event hosted by the Detroit chapter of the NAACP.
El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat, is facing Republican former congressman Mike Rogers in November.
A Republican victory would make Democrats’ path to taking control of the 100-seat Senate significantly more difficult.
The race is also drawing attention because of El-Sayed’s progressive platform. He supports universal healthcare and opposes US arms sales to Israel.
Harris’ Detroit appearances come as El-Sayed works to strengthen support in Wayne County after losing the area to Haley Stevens during the Democratic primary.
The Michigan visit also comes amid speculation about Harris’ political future ahead of the 2028 presidential election. She has not announced whether she plans to run.
