Charlize Theron explains how motherhood shapes her activism

Charlize Theron said that "every young person" has the right to "flourish and succeed" in a safe environment.

Speaking to People magazine, the 51-year-old actress shared that her personal experience as a mother has further strengthened her desire to help all children.

"I think my interest in working with young people — and especially young girls — that’s kind of been part of my life before I had kids," said Charlize.

"And I think once my kids leave [the house], [it] will still be part of what I find is important, you know? When you have two young girls … when they live in privilege, if anything, it makes me realise that I want safety for every young person," she continued.

The Oscar-winning star added, "I see that my kids are safe and they have a safe space and they can flourish and they can succeed, not just survive. And I want that for young people."

For those unaware, Charlize adopted Jackson, 14, in 2012, followed by August, 12, in 2015.

Previously, in an interview with Elle magazine, the Apex star said that adoption was "always [her] first choice."

"When I first filed [for adoption], my mom showed me a letter I’d written when I was little; I asked if we could go to the orphanage," sharedCharlize at that time. "In South Africa, orphanages were everywhere, and I wanted a brother or sister. I was always aware that there are so many children in this world who don’t have families.

"Adoption is a very personal thing — I know people whom I love dearly who don’t feel that they could raise another child as their own. I respect that," she continued.

"But for me — and I can’t be the only person out there — I never saw a difference in raising an adopted child versus my own biological child. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on something," addedCharlize. "This was always my first choice, even when I was in a relationship."
