China’s CXMT scales production to rival Samsung amid global memory chip shortages

CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies) is expanding its footprint in the global semiconductor market.

Capitalizing on a severe global memory shortage, the Chinese dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) giant is scaling up production to challenge established industry leaders like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, alongside fellow domestic player YMTC (Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp).

Strong demand from artificial intelligence servers has created a global memory shortage that industry executives believe will persist through at least 2027.

SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung said in July that 2027 could be the industry's worst year from a supply perspective, while TrendForce expects NAND supply tightness to ease only in the second half of next year.

Driven by massive AI data center investments, global memory giants have increasingly prioritized high-margin products like High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).

Manufacturers have also prioritized capital spending on DRAM and HBM, limiting additions to NAND flash capacity.

DRAM provides the working memory used by processors, while NAND stores data in phones, computers and data centres.

This shift has created acute supply bottlenecks and soaring prices for general-purpose DRAM such as DDR4 and DDR5.

Benefiting from this crunch, CXMT's sales experienced explosive growth, recording a multi-fold surge in interim profits and revenue.

Backed by a massive public listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market, CXMT has secured billions in fresh capital to fund aggressive production expansions.

As reported, CXMT has rapidly climbed the global ranks, securing a notable chunk of the global DRAM market share and challenging the traditional "Big Three" dominance.

Challenging Samsung and YMTC:

While Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron continue to dominate cutting-edge nodes and advanced AI memory, CXMT is positioning itself as a high-volume, cost-effective alternative for mainstream consumer and server hardware.

Targeting next-Gen standards, CXMT is ramping up development on advanced architectures—including LPDDR5X, server DDR5, and upcoming consumer DDR6 memory—while navigating strict international export controls by accelerating indigenous toolchains and alternative wafer designs.

With its rapidly scaling fabrication capacity in Hefei, Beijing, and Shanghai, CXMT is transitioning from a localized supplier into a formidable global competitor capable of reshaping the memory supply chain.
