Detroit Lions running back Isiah Pacheco has undergone back surgery and is expected to miss significant time, coach Dan Campbell announced Monday.

The procedure removed a body that was pressing on a nerve in Pacheco’s back.

The 27-year-old faces an expected 12-week recovery, with a December return targeted, according to ESPN.

Pacheco began the season on injured reserve after suffering an MCL sprain during training camp, although Campbell said the knee injury was no longer an issue.

The two-time Super Bowl champion joined Detroit on a one-year contract after spending four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He has recorded 2,537 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 576 carries during his NFL career.

Pacheco’s absence leaves the Lions increasingly reliant on Jahmyr Gibbs, with Sione Vaki and Jacob Saylors also expected to take larger roles.

Gibbs opened the season with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in Detroit’s overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints.
