'Star Trek' star William Shatner reveals a detail almost cut from Spock's look

Spock's pointed ears almost never made it to screen, according to William Shatner.

In a new conversation with Paul Wesley for Interview Magazine, the 95-year-old actor, who played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series, recalled that network executives initially wanted the feature removed from Leonard Nimoy's character.

"The first thing they said with Spock is, 'Get rid of the ears.' And bless our management, they said, 'No, we're not getting rid of the ears,'" Shatner said.

For Shatner, that decision reflected a broader willingness to embrace strange, imaginative choices that helped set the series apart from anything else on television at the time.

He recalled being drawn to the show's pilot specifically because of its bold, unconventional visuals, including elaborate makeup effects that gave the world a distinct sense of wonder.

Shatner said that spirit of embracing the unfamiliar became central to what made Star Trek resonate with audiences. Rather than trying to make everything feel grounded in reality, the show allowed viewers to accept unusual creatures and alien worlds without needing much explanation, simply asking them to go along with the journey.

Looking back, Shatner credited that sense of imaginative freedom as one of the biggest reasons the series became so popular, describing it as a kind of "science-fiction magic" that helped fuel its lasting appeal.
