Xi urges BRICS countries to stand on the right side of history: Here’s why
The BRICS group of nations has adopted a joint declaration underlying the need to work together to streamline global trade and supply chains
On Saturday, in an address to the 18th BRICS summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that BRICS countries should uphold cooperation and stand on the right side of history.
Xi called on BRICS countries to pioneer innovative development as well as in preserving peace and stability, advancing reciprocal learning among civilizations, and improving global governance underlining that BRICS countries should reshape global governance to ensure equity and work together to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
The summit is seeking reconciliation between Iran and the United Arab Emirates over the Gulf. The BRICS bloc aims to elevate its status through advocacy by influencing international rules and the reforming of institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization which some members brought under control by Western powers.
Notably, leaders attending the summit include Russian President Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi-Jinping, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyen. The Chinese leader called the bloc a leadership group for the Global South and a model of self-reliance among emerging economies that should promote innovation-driven development.
