The European Commission reportedly approved a € 6.1 billion military assistance package for Ukraine on Friday-aiming to fulfill Ukraine’s requests to source weapons from outside the bloc namely Patriot missiles.

The primary motive behind this approval is to allow Ukraine to use funds from the EU’s 90-billion-euro support loan to purchase US made Patriot interceptors. These are among the few defense systems capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

EU member states endorsed the new defense funding and the Patriot purchase this week but the key steps are awaiting final approval from the European Commission.

The latest package indicated that the EU has approved all of the 28.3 billion euros allocated for Ukraine’s defense under the support loan this year. The EU’s approval of the 90 billion support loan is Ukraine meant to cover two-thirds of Kyiv’s defense and budgetary needs in 2026 and 2027.

The loan also meets demands to buy weapons from the EU and Ukraine. Any other item where more than 35% of the sum of its parts comes from third countries requires explicit consent.

In this connection, EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said: “Ukraine's military edge depends on the rapid availability of critical products in the required quantities and within very short time frames.”

Furthermore, the commissioner did not explain which countries would take advantage of the waiver for drone components though an earlier exemption granted in April allowed Kyiv to procure components from China.
