Google commits $15B to Finnish AI infrastructure, marking its largest-ever European investment

Google has announced a record €13 billion investment to massively expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland through 2028.

Marking the tech giant's largest-ever European investment, the multi-billion-dollar initiative will fund four advanced data centers and secure long-term clean energy partnerships to power next-generation AI systems like Gemini across the continent.

Standing as Google’s largest-ever single European investment, the initiative is designed to power core consumer and enterprise platforms—including Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube while radically scaling the continent's digital readiness.

The massive capital injection spans four strategic locations. It covers the expansion of Google’s existing data center hub in Hamina (a historic paper mill converted back in 2009) alongside three new state-of-the-art facilities in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala.

To sustain the immense power demands of these next-generation AI workloads, the project weaves in heavy green-energy integration.

Google has partnered on long-term clean energy procurement, contracting domestic onshore wind capacity and grid-balancing battery storage systems, alongside leveraging Finland's cold climate for natural cooling efficiency.

As reported by Business Today, economically, the build-out is projected to contribute roughly $3.6 billion to Finland’s gross domestic product during construction.

It is expected to support over 37,000 temporary construction positions and secure roughly 7,000 permanent, high-tech operational jobs annually.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the decision as a decisive validation of the nation's robust digital economy, low-carbon energy grid, and stable innovation climate.
