Germany’s far-right set for historic victory in key eastern state

Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is projected to secure a major victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt ahead of its key competitors-though it is unclear whether that will be enough for the party to form a government.

Notably, no far-right has won control of a state in Germany since World War Two, a victory that would give it direct influence over domestic governance, local education and culture.

Saxony-Anhalt has a small population of 2.1 million and the AfD in the state is analyzed by homeland security as “right-wing extremist.”

The BSW has offered to collaborate with the AfD on select issues it enters into the state parliament. Furthermore, while the AfD led the national race ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz ruling conservatives’ and the Social Democrats, its firm support remained concentrated in the eastern states.
