Kristen Johnston breaks silence on fighting her demons while filming iconic 'Sex and the City' scene

Kristen Johnston recently got candid and opened up about her addictive behaviour that took over while she was filming her unforgettable scene in Sex and the City.

For those unaware, the 58-year-old American actress played the role of an ageing party girl, Lexi Featherson, in the eighteenth episode of season six, titled Splat. Her scene became tragically memorable as she was admonished for smoking inside a party, which made her say that she was “so bored” and “could die” just a few moments before she fell out of a high-rise window to her death.

Johnston illuminated Chelsea Handler‘s Dear Chelsea podcast with her presence on Thursday, September 3, where she revealed that she was at the peak of her addiction when she recorded the scene.

She said, “I was a hot mess. I was just kind of messy. Like late at night, after I was doing a lot of drinking after theatre, lots of wine, the occasional foray into cocaine, but not like [Lexi].”

The Modern Family star had been showing her unhealthy behavioral patterns since her childhood, as she “wasn’t obviously doing [drugs] then;” however, whatever she did was just her way to find “escape always.”

Explaining what she was going through at that time, Johnston quipped, “I did not like being in my skin. So, one of the first things I really had to figure out was how to be in my skin… [I was] like, what do people do at night if they don’t get drunk? So, I had to come up with crafts.”

“You have to just think of other things to do with your time because you don’t realize until you quit how much time, if you’re a real active addict, is spent figuring stuff out, how to get this, getting that thing, getting that delivered. It takes a lot of energy,” she added.

It is pertinent to mention that Kristen Johnston not only started drinking, but she also experimented with drugs in high school, which got worse as she was having “10, 20, 30 pills a day” at the same time when she was playing Sally Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun, according to her memoir Guts, published in 2012.
