Actor Theo James jokingly mentioned Sarah Ferguson while commenting on Meghan Markle’s acting return
“The Gentlemen” lead actor, Theo James, said he was "intrigued" by the speculation that Meghan Markle had been in talks to join the Guy Ritchie’s show.
The actor made the remark at the Netflix series' season two world premiere on Wednesday.
Later, speaking to Town & Country when he was asked the same question the actor quipped, “"Yes, Fergie is joining. She'll be playing my love interest."
He was referring to Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
James, who portrays Eddie, the 13th Duke of Halstead in The Gentleman, said he considers the Meghan rumours to be overblown.
"No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air," he said of the persistent coverage surrounding the Duchess's supposed involvement in the show.
Reports in late August had linked Markle to a role in season three of the crime drama shortly after she and Prince Harry announced plans to return to Britain.
However, subsequent media reports suggested the proposal had been dropped amid a "backlash" to the speculation.
Series co-writer and executive producer Matthew Read pointed out that Ritchie has "a great tradition of casting people from unexpected places", adding the level of interest in potential cast members demonstrated how invested audiences have become in the show.
