Robert Irwin and his sister Bindi are paying heartfelt homage to their late father Steve Irwin on his death anniversary.
For those unaware, Steve passed away at the age of 44 on September 4, 2006, after a short-tailed stingray bit him while he was shooting in the Great Barrier Reef for the underwater documentary Ocean’s Deadliest. The stingray's barb pierced his chest, penetrating his thoracic wall and heart, which resulted in great trauma.
Remembering his father on his 20th death anniversary, Robert posted a throwback photograph in which he can be seen sitting on his father’s lap as a baby.
He also added a caption under his heartwarming post that read, “Your legacy is forever.”
In addition, Bindi also took to her Instagram and posted a video of her late father sharing his feelings on her arrival in his life in one of his old interviews.
“The most incredible wildlife encounter of my life was the birth of my daughter Bindi. I am the proudest father on the face of the earth, no doubt,” the Australian conservationist and environmentalist said.
Reflecting on the grief her family is silently going through since Steve’s death, she captioned her post, “20 years ago, today, the world lost the most passionate and dedicated wildlife conservationist. Our family lost our superhero. My mum lost the love of her life; my brother and I lost the greatest dad.”
“Grief never truly leaves us; we walk alongside it every day. Where there is enormous grief, there is even greater love.”
“I always thought that my dad’s legacy is wildlife conservation; it turns out, his legacy is love. For our planet and for each other,” the 28-year-old wrote.
Despite his absence from this world, Bindi’s five-year-old daughter has built a strong bond with her late grandfather by watching his documentaries.
The Dancing with the Stars dancer penned, “I have a 5-year-old daughter who watches his documentaries every morning. She feels utterly loved by her ‘grandpa crocodile’ without ever having met him.”
“My dad left a lasting impact so poignant that it will ripple out for generations to come. I believe with my whole heart that his love will live on forever. In all of us. In every kindness we show to the Earth.”
“Dad, I love you with my whole heart. Thank you for being our guardian angel. And most of all, thank you for watching over my daughter now, too. She loves you so much. We all do,” Bindi Irwin concluded.
