OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra: Here’s what the new AI can do

OpenAI on Thursday unveiled its most powerful AI model, GPT-6 Astra in a major push to expand its footprint in the competitive landscape.
As per the tech giant, the new AI model is built on breakthroughs across pre-training, reinforcement learning and alignment.
Speaking about its core capabilities, the GPT-6 Astra excels in state-of-art performance in computer and browser use, cybersecurity, software engineering, science, mathematics and complex professional work.
The highly advanced model is also capable of handling tedious workflows like filling out online forms, updating customer records, organizing calendars, conducting research, and generating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
OpenAI calls GPT-6 Astra its “best software-engineering model to date.” A new Codex capability allows Astra to preserve and search information across context windows, thereby reducing the chances of information loss during long coding sessions.
"It scores 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI 3, and 100% on ExploitBench," Sam Altman wrote on X.
One of the biggest hallmarks of this model is cybersecurity. According to OpenAI, Astra demonstrates a major jump in cybersecurity capabilities and meets its critical threshold under its “Preparedness Framework.”
As per the ChatGPT maker company, it can potentially find vulnerabilities faster, but the same capabilities could make exploitation easier.
The launch version refuses some advanced offensive cybersecurity requests, including creating proof-of-concept exploits.
The model is also better at ensuring safety by understanding user intent and avoiding unintended consequences.
"It took us some extra time to ensure that we could meet the safety and alignment standards required for this capability level, but we think you’ll find it worth the wait."
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called Astra the company's "most aligned model ever," saying it sets "a new standard" for safety as AI models become more capable.
"We have set a new standard with this model. It's why it took us a while to get it out, but we think it'll be worth the wait," Altman said.
On the other hand, the president Greg Brockman called the milestone as a turning point into the AGI era.
"I think it’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era," Brockman said.
GPT‑6 Astra will be available to a limited set of organizations and over the coming days will become available to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, as well as through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock.
