Last surviving sibling of the king mourns Harald V’s death

Princess Astrid, the last surviving sibling of the late King Harald V, paid tribute to her brother who died on Friday at the age of 89.

The royal family shared multiple pictures of the princess sitting near the coffin of King Harald.

Two other photos posted by the royal family on social media showed the princess sitting near the palace window to witness crowds who had gathered to pay tribute to the late monarch.

Thousands of Norwegians have streamed to the royal palace to lay flowers, drawings, candles and flags.

Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner, is the second daughter and the last surviving child of King Olav V and Princess Märtha of Sweden.

She is the aunt of King Haakon VIII, the older sister of the late King Harald V.

The state funeral for late King Harald V of Norway will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

King Haakon VIII took an oath before parliament on Tuesday following the death of ‌his father, pledging to uphold the Nordic country's constitution and laws in the latest in a series of ceremonies marking the passing of the crown.
