John Ternus takes over as Apple CEO: Why AI will define his leadership

After 15 successful years at Apple, Tim Cook stepped down as the CEO, leaving the position for his successor John Ternus in a monumental shift.
On September 1, John Ternus took charge as a new CEO of Apple. He was the company’s former Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran who played a pivotal role in the transition to Apple Silicon, the iPad lineup, and the Vision Pro, inherits a tech giant facing distinct new horizons.
Previously at Apple, Ternus supervised the hardware design team at Apple, responsible for introducing top-notch innovations with a special focus on “durability and reliability.”
He is also one of the major design minds behind the upcoming iPhone Ultra which is Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
What to expect from his new role at Apple?
Speaking about Ternus’ new role as CEO at Apple, it is expected that his vast experience in design and innovation could be helpful in shaping Apple’s future strategy. Under his leadership, Apple has launched several notable products including ultra-thin iPhone Air, lower-cost MacBook Neo, and AirPods with hearing health features.
Moreover, Ternus as Apple’s CEO is set to take the stage at Apple Park on September 9 to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro lineup alongside Apple’s debit book-style foldable device.
He will also lead the presentation for a rumoured touchscreen MacBook, camera-equipped Airpods and iPad featuring an OLED screen styled after iPhone.
AI: A defining moment for Ternus leadership
According to Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at investment firm Yorkville Ives & Co, “Tim Cook left the house in phenomenal order.”
“But now, it’s about Ternus defining the AI chapter.”
While some analysts argued software chief Craig Federighi was a better choice when it comes to focusing on Apple’s AI-focused era. However Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, believed that consumers still adopt technology primarily through hardware. Given the expertise of Ternus in hardware, he is the excellent choice.
Even on his last day, outgoing CEO Tim Cook endorsed John Ternus, saying, “Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does.”
In the Cook’s era, the company gained leverage over global supply chains, service monetization and wearables. Under the leadership of Ternus, Apple will try to gain a footprint in generative AI, machine learning integration and advanced spatial computing.
Besides the AI landscape, Ternus will face other challenges: managing Apple’s complex global supply chains linked to China and navigating political pressures, including Trump’s tariffs and geopolitical tensions.
