Apple's September 9 invite may leak iPhone 18 Pro camera

Apple has never confirmed a single spec through an event invite before opening night, but that's never stopped anyone from trying to read one anyway. This year, the analyst doing the reading is Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, and his theory touches two of the most-rumoured iPhone 18 Pro features at once.

Apple's "Surprise and Shine" invite for its September 9 event shows a glowing Apple logo set against a light blue background, with a bright flare at its centre.

Gurman posted on X that he reads the flare as a nod to a mechanical aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the blue background as a hint toward a new sky blue finish for the Pro lineup. Apple, as usual, hasn't confirmed either interpretation.

MacRumors has tracked variable aperture rumours for the iPhone Pro line since 2024, and a mechanical aperture would be a first for any iPhone.

A recent report out of China suggested the feature might land exclusively on the larger Pro Max, leaving the standard Pro model without it, a possibility Gurman himself pushed back on publicly, saying he'd rather see it available across both sizes.

If Apple builds it with adjustable blades similar to a DSLR, it could hand photographers real control over depth of field and low-light exposure, assuming Apple doesn't automate the whole process instead.

Sky Blue would join Dark Cherry, Dark Grey, and Silver as the reported colour options for the iPhone 18 Pro, with Cosmic Orange from last year's model apparently retired.

Dark Cherry has already surfaced in leaked prototype images ahead of launch, making it likely to serve as this generation's signature shade even with Sky Blue drawing attention from the invite itself.
