US Education Department’s video draws fire over Trump-Hitler comparison
The controversial video was promptly taken down a short while later
The Department of Education has reignited new controversy unintentionally by posting a video that implicitly appeared to compare President Donald Trump with Adolf Hitler.
The Department’s official X account faced scrutiny after sharing a controversial post, featuring a scene from the 2017 Winston Churchill biopic “Darkest Hour” starring Gary Oldman.
In the clip, Churchill shouts, “You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth.” Then the video cuts to a montage of Trump, showing his clips. And the Department captioned the post, “No one does it like us,” accompanied by a tiger emoji.
What sparked the controversy is the Department’s lack of understanding in historical context. In the movie, Churchill used the tiger metaphor not as a noun to describe animals. Metaphorically it referred to Adolf Hitler, expressing outrage when government officials suggested negotiating with the Nazi leader.
Soon after posting the clip on X, several users pointed out the Education Department’s blunder while having no knowledge in which context word tiger had been used in the movie before making a clip.
Matt Rein, a Democratic National Committee official, wrote on X, “the ‘tiger’ being referenced here is Hitler btw.”
The backlash over the unintentional Trump-Hitler comparison prompted the Department to remove the post from its official account.
