Rupert Grint joins 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' for limited run
Rupert Grint is returning to the Harry Potter franchise, joining the Broadway production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" in New York, where he'll reprise his role as Ron Weasley.
Grint, who played Ron throughout the entire film series, will join the stage production for a limited time beginning in February 2027 and running through the end of May that year. This marks nearly two decades since he wrapped filming on the last Harry Potter movie.
In a statement, Grint shared how meaningful it feels to return to the character now that he's also become a father himself.
“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting."
He continued,“The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.”
Producers of the show Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender welcomed Grint's casting, describing his portrayal of Ron as one that helped define what it meant to be a loyal friend for an entire generation of fans.
“Rupert Grint’s performance as Ron Weasley in the eight Harry Potter films defined for generations what it meant to be a loyal and brave friend even in the face of adversity and hardship."
They noted that his return continues a journey he began as a child actor, now brought forward with years of additional life experience.
“In joining our extraordinary company onstage at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past. He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded.”
Grint's announcement follows a similar Broadway return from another original cast member Tom Felton earlier this year, who continues performing in the production through early 2027.
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" has become one of the most successful stage productions in recent years, selling millions of tickets worldwide since its debut in 2016.
