Why Zelenskyy honors Elon Musk with Ukraine’s Order of Freedom
The Order of Freedom, frequently presented to international leaders in recognition of their backing for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has honored Elon Musk with the country's Order of Freedom on Wednesday.
Zelenskyy signed a presidential decree, praising Musk for his efforts and merits in protecting lives and Freedom and strengthening relations between the United States and Ukraine.
The decree also highlights SpaceX’s Starlink network which has delivered internet services to Ukrainian people and forces in the midst of years-long conflict with Russia to maintain communications and coordinate operations.
In February 2026, SpaceX disabled thousands of Starlink terminals used by Russian forces, thereby weakening their military capabilities.
The announcement comes after the Ukrainian president’ efforts to convince the 54-year-old billionaire to allow its forces to use the Starlink network within Russian territory.
The expansion would allow Ukraine to launch missiles and deep-strikes inside Russia with high accuracy.
“For now, Musk has said that this would be an escalation. But he may change his mind when he sees more arguments,” Zelenskyy said last Saturday.
This recognition underscores Ukraine's gratitude for tech support amid the ongoing conflict and efforts to bolster international partnerships.
The Order of Freedom, frequently presented to international leaders in recognition of their backing for Ukraine, was recently conferred upon French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.
