Swedish military makes major move involving Russian-owned estate near naval base

Sweden’s Armed Forces have reportedly asked the government to take control of a Russian-owned estate located near a naval base-a move that has highlighted protection security concerns regarding the restricted airspace zone.

The military confiscation of the beach plot near Musko base in the Stockholm archipelago cites the threat from Russian drones and concerns over the property’s ownership status.

According to Swedish reports, a businessman with links to the Russian state has been developing a high-end home on Musko Island although his wife, who holds both Russian and Swedish citizenship.

The military said about the location in a statement: “Unique conditions for strengthening the defense of Musko Naval base, particularly against drones.”

According to the military, the development of Russian drone warfare has shifted the strategic outlook for Sweden. In this connection, Defense Minister Pal Jonson said the country needed to maintain absolute operational security at the site to preserve its strategic advantage.

The property is the only site near the Musko base that is not under the armed forces’ control and is needed to establish an effective defense of the nearby base especially against drones. In addition, the application was submitted under a legal provision allowing the state to expropriate an area needed for national defense.
