New study reveals irregular sleep patterns accelerate biological aging

Recent large-scale studies highlight a powerful connection between sleep patterns and biological aging, showing that poor sleep quality or abnormal sleep durations can actually make your brain and organs age faster.

A 2026 study of 93,249 UK Biobank participants identified different sleep patterns using wearable-device data.

People with more irregular sleep or more fragmented/light sleep had higher risks of several age-related diseases and showed associations with biological “hallmarks” of aging.

Another recent study in Nature found a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and biological aging.

The study reveals the lowest biological-age gaps generally occurred around 6.4–7.8 hours, depending on the organ system and sex.

Both under 6 hours and over 8 hours were associated with higher disease and mortality risk compared with 6–8 hours.

Research analyzing biological aging clocks across various organ systems found a clear U-shaped pattern.

The healthiest aging patterns and the slowest biological aging were observed in individuals who sleep between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night.

Consistently sleeping significantly less or more than this range was linked to accelerated aging not just in the brain, but across multiple organ systems including the heart, lungs, immune system, and metabolic pathways.

Separate brain-imaging studies such as those from the Karolinska Institute found that poor overall sleep quality characterized by frequent insomnia, heavy snoring, daytime sleepiness, or irregular sleep schedules can cause the brain to appear up to a year older than a person's actual chronological age.

Researchers discovered that low-grade chronic inflammation in the body partially explains why poor sleep accelerates aging, serving as a biological bridge between bad sleep habits and cellular wear-and-tear.

Unlike chronological age, biological age is modifiable.
