OpenAI appears to be building a way to lock individual ChatGPT conversations behind a PIN or fingerprint scan, based on hidden, not-yet-active code discovered in the latest version of ChatGPT for Android.
Android Authority found references to "locked chats" and the ability to "protect chats" from prying eyes while digging through app version 1.2026.230.
A line revealed from the code seems to be a direct quote about the aim of the feature: "Lock a chat to keep its title and content out of view in your regular sidebar, history, and search results."
From this description, one can assume that this locked chat feature works not like a new mode but more like a privacy setting for existing chats, which keeps them away from being seen in any accidental look at your mobile device.
Temporary chats for sensitive conversations are already offered by ChatGPT, but they get completely wiped out after closing them, which makes it impossible to access them later on.
The locked chat feature seems to address the above dilemma right away because the conversations will still be stored in your account but just locked for your access.
This is particularly important for people who wish to store a private conversation for future use without exposing it in the chat history of a shared/borrowed device.
How locked chats would interact with ChatGPT's memory and recall features remains unclear. It's possible information shared inside a locked chat would only feed into other locked conversations when memory is enabled, creating a kind of privacy boundary that keeps sensitive context from bleeding into your regular chat history.
