Kurt Busch opens up about his last words to brother NASCAR legend Kyle Busch

NASCAR Hall of Fame Kurt Busch has opened about his feelings and the conditions of his younger brother’s conditioning in his very first interview since the death of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch in May.

Speaking with Craig Melvin on Friday, Kurt revealed how he is processing the grief stemming from the death of his brother from severe pneumonia that worsened into sepsis.

“There is no book. There is no outline on what we’re supposed to do right now,” Kurt Busch told Craig.

According to Kurt, Kyle’s final moments at the track revealed a frighteningly rapid decline. The crew chief recalled walking into the restroom and hearing Kyle coughing forcefully.

When asked if he was all right, Kyle simply answered, no. He was slumped on the floor with his back against the wall, and blood was visible in the sink. When the crew chief pointed out that he looked terrible, Kyle again repeated, "No."

After calling an ambulance and being admitted to the hospital, just hours later, he passed away.

“I was there at the hospital all day. Hoping. Praying. Hoping for a turnaround,” he said.

He continued, “It’s just everything had plateaued so fast. It just escalated so fast. And so I don’t explain it to people, I don’t. What I saw, what I went through, nobody needs to go through that. Samantha’s right there all the way through. My mom. My dad. Team owners were starting to show up, and NASCAR (officials).”

Speaking about his last words to brother Kyle, Kurt said, ““I said, ‘I got you man. Come on. I got you. I got you, come on. Be strong,’” he recalled while wiping away tears. “It just wasn’t fair.”

Kyle Busch’s cause of death was later identified as sepsis. Three days after his passing, NASCAR honoured his memory with an emotional tribute before a crowd of 95,000 fans at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
