Iran vows to overcome US ‘unjust sanctions,’ plans new strategy

Iran parliament speaker Baqer Qalibaf has vowed to overcome “unjust sanctions” imposed by the US in the form of the Economic D-Day campaign against Tehran.

According to Qalibaf, Iran needs a strategic plan to counter these sanctions. His remarks came a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a sweeping new package of sanctions, slated for release on Monday, which Bessent claims are the most severe ever imposed on Iran in history and could help avert further military escalation.

"It is a one-two punch. We have the blockade (on Iran), and we are going to have the toughest sanctions in history," he added.

He accused the United States and Israel of carrying out economic and "cognitive" warfare as they failed to prevail in ongoing confrontation.

"If you look at the resources and raw materials of Muslim countries, you will realize that our enemies come to plunder them," Qalibaf told Iranian and Iraqi business representatives in Baghdad, according to his Telegram channel.

"Therefore, we must make plans to deal with the unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them.

According to Qalibaf, Iran is also seeking to strengthen economic ties between Tehran and Baghdad, citing both countries could leverage their national currencies in trade to cut the reliance on the US dollar.

On Thursday, Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi slammed Trump’s newly announced “Economic D-Day” campaign against Tehran.

“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” he said.

“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat and enmity of Iranians,” he said, adding that what he called US “economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.”

Now it remains to be seen what strategies Iran will adopt to overcome the crushing economic sanctions.
