Spain rocked by 4.8-magnitude earthquake with epicentre near Granada
The tremor was strongly felt in several parts of Malaga province as well as communities across Granada in Spain
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck southern Spain early Saturday, with shaking felt across Granada and neighbouring Malaga province.
The earthquake hit at 1.04 AM on August 15, according to Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN).
Its epicentre was in Alhendín, a municipality in Granada province, at a depth of about 10 kilometres. The IGN recorded the earthquake at an intensity of IV to V.
The tremor was strongly felt in several parts of Malaga province as well as communities across Granada.
Andalusia's 112 emergency service received calls from residents in Granada city and municipalities including La Zubia, Churriana de la Vega, Las Gabias, Ogíjares and Maracena.
The earthquake followed another significant tremor in the region just hours earlier.
A magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck at around 6.43 PM on Friday, with its epicentre in La Zubia. It registered an intensity of IV and was widely felt across Granada and surrounding communities.
There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries following Saturday's stronger earthquake.
The two earthquakes occurring within hours of each other prompted reports of shaking across a wide area of southern Spain.
