Apple is training a China-specific AI model with Alibaba’s support, aiming to clear regulatory hurdles and bring Apple Intelligence to Chinese users
Apple has developed a customized large language model LLM specifically for the Chinese market with the technical backing of Alibaba Group, marking a major shift in its local artificial intelligence strategy.
The tech giant has trained a LLM, as a departure from the iPhone maker's strategy of relying on third-party models to power AI features in the country.
Rather than relying entirely on external domestic models to power features, Apple co-developed and trained a bespoke, China-specific model using Alibaba's infrastructure and support.
Following regulatory clearance from the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), Apple stands to become the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer a proprietary AI model in mainland China.
The development paves the way for the localized debut of Apple Intelligence via an upcoming iOS software update in the coming months.
The move gives Apple tighter control over user experience in its critical overseas market, where it faces intense competition from local smartphone manufacturers like Huawei that have rapidly integrated advanced AI features into their hardware.
Apple's training of its own China-specific model has not been reported before.
The company had previously leaned towards domestic partners' models to bring generative AI to iPhones and other devices sold in China, where U.S. models such as Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT, which Apple pairs with its own technology in its home market, are not available.
A China-tailored model of its own would give Apple greater control over the AI experience in its most competitive overseas market, where it has lost ground to local rivals including Huawei that have raced ahead with AI-equipped handsets.
As reported, Apple Intelligence-the company’s suite of AI tools, is expected to launch in China in the coming months after an update to its iOS operating system.
