New messenger app sends texts by virtual carrier pigeons: What to know

A new messaging application is taking a whimsical twist on texting by sending messages through virtual carrier pigeons.

The messaging app was built with the least productive WhatsApp imaginable delivering your texts through virtual carrier pigeon. It is called Carrier Pidge-the iOS app that deliberately rephrases travel between users rather than delivering them instantly.

Messages move at 110mph with delivery time estimated using the real GPS distance between sender and recipient. This specifically means sending right away without delay could drive within seconds, sending a message across the US would take hours, and reaching someone on the other side of the world takes several days.

It is crucial to note that each pigeon has a 0.2% chance of getting lost during its journey and dying before it arrives at the destination. Its flying speed can vary by 25%. It took around three weeks for developer Noah Larrobino to put together, and he has been transparent about the app’s deliberate pointless premise with the whole app focusing on returning into the carrier pigeon theme.

Friends added through Carrier Pidge become your “flock”; when friend requests arrive continuously, they are stored in the aviary.

Furthermore, this is similar to another application called Roost which also sends messages in real time using virtual birds. The applications were launched in April 2026 despite growing concerns they had copied each other as both claimed independent creation.
