Bank of America bets $250 billion on America's AI, energy and transport buildout
Bank of America will deploy $250bn by July 2027 for US data centres, energy and infrastructure
Bank of America is putting real money behind Washington's infrastructure ambitions, pledging $250 billion to finance American digital, energy and transport projects over the next 18 months.
The bank announced its "Critical Infrastructure Finance Initiative" on Wednesday, timed to coincide with the country's 250th anniversary celebrations.
What Bank of America money will fund?
The initiative covers primary market lending, direct investments, capital markets services and advisory work. Financing will span three categories: digital infrastructure such as data centres and computing hardware, energy and power projects including renewables and storage, and core infrastructure like transportation and natural gas.
This comes amid Morgan Stanley’s recent announcement of the provision of $1.5 trillion for similar investments over the next ten years.
This is part of the efforts of American banks to align themselves to trends, which include the emergence of new AI data centres, the quest for critical minerals, and upgrading the national power grid.
Banks that have the ability to offer project finance services will benefit from fee revenues from loans, underwriting, and advisory.
Karen Fang, the co-head of global capital solutions for the bank, commented that addressing the nation's infrastructure needs would require capital mobilisation across sectors that are becoming increasingly integrated each year.
She further noted that executing such projects would require financing arrangements that incorporate both corporate and project-specific capital, from both the public and private markets, instead of depending on one funding stream.
The $250 billion amount is not a one-time commitment but rather a target based on the qualifying activity in a given window, beginning 1 January 2026, the beginning of America's 250th year, and ending 4 July 2027.
