A farmer in China named Wu accidentally destroyed his entire 25-acre crop overnight after strictly following pesticide advice from an AI application.

According to local reports, he relied on the app for advice on everything from scheduling to fertilizing and agreeing to discussion without any personal verification or confirming the information with other sources.

The incident stemmed from an earlier request he asked about the overall plan to keep weeds down on sesame crops, and the AI suggested a treatment plan to completely destroy a large field of seedbed.

In light of the current incident, agricultural experts assigned responsibility for the error to a herbicide called flufenacet which can be harmful to sesame fields if not used in a precise manner. The farmer told Taiwanese new site CTWANT: “The seedlings were no good the day after I sprayed them.”

“The weeds and seedlings died together, and the seedlings died together and the seedlings died even faster.”

The chatbot app used by the farmer reportedly displayed a warning at the top of the chat window, stating: “AI generation may be incorrect, please verify.”

It has been observed that similar discussions were found on prominent AI apps like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini’s thought several users underwent troubles for not checking answers provided by chatbots.

Earlier, the authors stated that AI apps could generate scientific errors, lack the ability to critically discuss desired results and ultimately trigger the spread of misinformation.

OpenAI has rolled out an upgrade for ChatGPT that yields high-quality insights though the company warned that the chatbot is not for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition.
