Khamenei says he opposed US-Iran deal but approved it after Pezeshkian's assurances
Khamenei said he had “a different opinion” on the deal but ultimately gave his approval
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has revealed that he initially disagreed with the agreement reached between Tehran and Washington but approved it after receiving assurances from President Masoud Pezeshkian and other officials.
In a written statement carried by Iranian state media, Khamenei said he had “a different opinion” on the deal but ultimately gave his approval after being promised that Iran’s interests would be protected.
“I had ‘a different opinion’ on the US-Iran agreement ‘but due to the commitment that the honorable President… gave me on behalf of himself and other members in safeguarding the rights of the Iranian nation and the resistance front, and explicitly accepted responsibility for it, I granted permission’,” Khamenei said.
The comments come a day after Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending months of conflict and opening the door to further negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Despite backing the agreement, Khamenei warned that Iran would not accept additional demands from Washington.
“If the American side wants to be greedy, they [Iran] will not accept it [the agreement],” he added.
According to the news source, the agreement includes a commitment to halt military operations and leaves key issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities to be negotiated during a 60-day period that could be extended by mutual agreement.
