Even co-star didn't recognize Hugh Jackman in rugged Robin Hood makeover

Hugh Jackman pulled off a dramatic transformation in his upcoming movie, The Death of Robin Hood.

The look was so intense and gritty that even his co-star, Jodie Comer, admitted she did not recognize him at first when she walked into the makeup trailer.

“I think you'd already begun filming that week, and I arrived to do my makeup test,” she told People.

“He was in the makeup bus fully made up, and I was like, ‘Who's that?' And then I heard his voice and I was like, ‘Oh my God.' It was so striking.”

Traditionally, the filmmakers imagined Robin Hood in a specific way.

However, Jackman's new movie tore that script.

His massive beard and grittier wilderness-survivor look are a far cry from the legendary outlaw.

Jackman admitted the makeover went extreme, sharing that his beard was not real.

“I didn't have time to grow the beard, so that's fake,” he said.

The goal was to stun fans and prevent them from quickly recognizing the popular character.

Given the movie's brutal tone, the atmosphere on set was far from grim.

Comer shared, “There's so much levity.”

Jackman agreed. “We were shooting in Ireland,” he said. “There's a lot of humor and a lot of love.”

The Death of Robin Hood arrives in cinemas on June 19.
