Jon Hamm weighs in on ‘dark’ modern dating culture: 'I was never really good at dating anyway'

Jon Hamm says marriage beats today’s "dark" dating scene, which he believes has affected how people connect.

The 55-year-old actor shared his two cents on romantic relationships in a recent interview, criticising app-based dating for reducing meaningful connections to surface-level judgments.

He slammed the concept of someone’s worth based on a photo as “transactional,” and called it a wrong approach for meeting people.

"It’s pretty bleak. It’s just another indictment of social media. It feels transactional. It feels like it highlights the wrong part of dating and meeting people," he told Elle.

Hamm admitted he never fully engaged with dating apps, even when he was single, and said he’s glad to be off the market.

"I’m looking at a fucking picture and deciding whether they’re worthwhile? It just feels a little dark. I was never really good at dating anyway, so I’m glad to not be out in the world, as it were.

Now married, Hamm said his perspective on relationships has shifted after "having come out of a long relationship that was not a marriage, then being single and figuring out life in my late 40s, and then being in a relationship again."

"Compromise and communication and all the things that you have to relearn, or reteach yourself, it doesn’t come overnight. It’s a practice that you have to get better at," he told the magazine of what marriage has taught him, calling it all a "new set of skills".

Hamm acknowledged that growth doesn’t happen instantly and comes with "mistakes" and "failures."

"It’s based on love and a willingness to say, ‘I’ve gotta be able to do better than this, so I need to figure out how I’ve been less-than and work on it,’" he noted. "And that’s going to therapy and couples therapy, asking, ‘Is it me, is it them, or is it us?’ And it gets better."

Hamm married Anna Osceola, 37, at Anderson Canyon in Big Sur, California, on June 24, 2023, just months after news of their engagement.
