Caden Fine, was one of three junior hockey players who died Monday in a fatal crash while driving to practice with the Southern Alberta Mustangs.
The collision with a gravel-hauling semi-truck on Highway 2 near Stavely claimed the lives of all three teens, according to the RCMP.
Fine, a 17-year-old forward from Birmingham, Alabama, had crossed the border from the United States to pursue competitive hockey in Canada’s junior system, a step many young players take to elevate their development.
He was in his first season with the Mustangs.
The team’s social media announcement noted the “unimaginable loss” and requested privacy for the families during this difficult time.
Prime Minister Mark Carney offered condolences on social media, saying his “heart breaks for the families of the three young hockey players,” underlining the widespread impact the tragedy has had beyond the hockey community.
