RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson expressed high optimism and excitement over Babar Azam’s return to the national T20I squad, saying the former captain’s presence would add strength, experience, and much-needed composure to the batting order ahead of the three-match series against South Africa starting Monday.

Talking to the media on Sunday, Hesson confirmed that Babar would bat at the crucial one-down position, a role he believes suits the star batter’s style and temperament. “Babar has been inducted into the T20 squad with the hope that he’ll outshine everyone,” Hesson said. “He will bat at one-down, and I expect him to shine and make a strong comeback. He’s a quality player with all the experience and maturity to guide the team through tough situations.”

The head coach predicted a fierce and entertaining contest against South Africa. “South Africa are a quality T20 side with a good balance of power-hitters and disciplined bowlers. I expect this series to be full of energy and excitement, something that the fans will truly enjoy,” he added.

Hesson also addressed the omission of wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris, stressing that the youngster still had a bright future if he focused on consistency and domestic performances.

“Haris has had numerous opportunities. He’s a talented player but needs to put in the hard yards in domestic cricket to earn his way back. We haven’t shut the door on anyone; it’s about performance and discipline,” Hesson remarked.

The coach placed his faith in Haris’s replacement, Mohammad Usman, who, according to him, offers something different. “Usman is a quality player of spin and has shown good temperament under pressure. This is his chance to grab the opportunity and prove his worth at the international level.”

With the ICC T20 World Cup on the horizon, Hesson said that building a balanced and competitive side was his main focus. “Our eyes are firmly on the World Cup. Every series from now on is about finding the right combination and the right mindset. We are working to raise a competitive and well-prepared team.”

Hesson also shed light on the absence of senior opener Fakhar Zaman, saying the left-hander needed more domestic exposure before returning to international cricket. “Fakhar needs some first-class and domestic exposure to get back into rhythm. He’s a match-winner, but he must spend time at the domestic level to find his full groove again,” he explained.

The coach praised emerging spinner Usman Tariq, hinting at his growing role in Pakistan’s white-ball setup. “Usman Tariq is a high-quality spinner with great control and variation. We want him to gain international experience, and that’s why he’s been brought into the squad.”

Ending on a confident note, Hesson said the management’s collective effort was directed toward long-term consistency rather than short-term results. “We are building toward something bigger. The goal is clear, a well-balanced, fearless Pakistan team ready to challenge the best in the world when the World Cup arrives.”
