OpenAI faces seven lawsuits linking ChatGPT to user suicides, mental harm

Open AI is currently facing seven lawsuits in California state courts alleging that its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, was involved in individual’s suicides and caused severe psychological distress.

The seven complaints have been filed by six adults and a teen by the Social Media Victims Law Centre and the Tech Justice Law Project, alleging that Open AI is responsible for wrongful death, assisted suicide, and negligence.

The serious action was taken as a necessary consequence of Open AI and Samuel Altman’s thoughtful decision to implement safety rules.

These lawsuits are primarily designed to establish accountability for blurring the line between tool and companion, especially as the focus on increasing user engagement prioritizes market dominance over user safety.

The current cases reflect the widespread issues about the psychological risks of conversational AI which can cause harm to people who use technology.

Additionally, the seven lawsuits filed against Open AI are pending in California. Such tragic issues arise when people rely entirely on conversational AI platforms.
