The election night in the U.S. showed the world that anything is possible in America, as the New Yorkers announced their verdict in favor of 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, who convincingly defeated his rival Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who focuses on the issues of the working class and attracted a diverse bond between volunteers and supporters who elected him, was an underdog just a year ago.
It’s the second time Mamdani has defeated Andrew Cuomo, first in the Democratic primary in June this year.
Zohran Mamdani addressed his supporters in a victory speech that promised much for the days ahead as he responded to Donald Trump, saying, "Turn the volume up.”
Mamdani told his supporters that they have turned a "new age" of politics in the city of NY.
He said, “For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well connected that power does not belong in their hands, fingers bruised from lifting boxes on the warehouse floor.”
“Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. We have toppled a political dynasty,” Mamdani told his supporters while referring to Cuomo.
He thanked the people of New York for turning out in large numbers, ensuring he won big.
“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him, and if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power.”
Mamdani continued, “This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one.”
While concluding his victory speech, Mamdani made a headline-grabbing statement; he said, “Donald Trump, since you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”
While Donald Trump, in his response posted on social media platform Truth Social, said, ‘“TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters.”
With these words is marked the beginning of a battle that will set the course over the next three years between U.S. President Donald Trump and the newly elected mayor of NYC, Zohran Mamdani.
