Dear Editor,
In the 11 October issue of Us, Memoona Mukhtar’s story ‘Surkh jora’ really touched me. It tells the story of a young girl caught between her dreams and the reality imposed by tradition – wanting to study and grow, but facing an arranged marriage instead. What made the story especially moving was how her husband, on their very wedding night, chose to support her dreams rather than hold her back. That moment gave me hope, showing that even in places where old customs feel unbreakable, kindness and understanding can bring real change. It reminded me how important it is for families – and especially partners – to lift each other up, not limit each other. Memoona’s storytelling made this struggle feel real and close to the heart, and it’s a beautiful reminder that progress often starts with empathy and support.

Protecting marine life
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep concern about a serious issue affecting every country, especially those struggling with poverty – the destruction of marine life.
Marine ecosystems are being harmed every day due to increasing pollution caused by garbage, plastic waste, oil spills, and excessive shipping activities. One of the most dangerous threats is plastic pollution. People often throw plastic into the sea without realizing how harmful it is. When fish accidentally consume plastic, it can lead to their death. This not only affects marine species but also the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing to support their families and educate their children.
Millions of fish are caught daily, and many more die due to the polluted waters. Additionally, coral reefs – which are essential to the health of the ocean – are being damaged, further disrupting the underwater ecosystem.
I humbly urge both the government and the public to take action. Strict laws should be enforced to prevent plastic from being dumped into our waters, and awareness campaigns must be launched to educate people about protecting marine life. It is our shared responsibility to preserve the ocean for future generations.
