ChatGPT to discontinue WhatsApp service in January

OpenAI has confirmed that its chatbot will stop working in Meta’s messaging services and other chat apps effective January 15, 2026.

The prime motive behind this revelation stems from the changes in WhatsApp’s policies and terms.

OpenAI has confirmed in a blog post, “While we would have much preferred to continue serving you on WhatsApp, we are focused on making the transition as easy for all of our users as possible.”

It has been observed that WhatsApp doesn't support chat exports and there is no other way to backup chat history after the specified date.

Meanwhile under the 1-800-ChatGPT contact profile in WhatsApp, you will see an option to link your ChatGPT account.

When you select the specific option, all your queries on WhatsApp will merge with your ChatGPT history.

At this point, we can only speculate that Meta’s new policy is not good for businesses, and that Meta does not want to support rival AI companies.

Nonetheless, the current policy to prohibit general AI chatbots such as ChatGPT inside WhatsApp is now in effect.
