Meta lays off 600 employees from AI division in major shake-up

Mark Zuckerberg-owned tech giant Meta has announced plans to lay off 600 employees from its artificial intelligence unit.

A memo from the company’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, confirmed the layoffs and it has been revealed that mostly legacy workers and members of Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Unit (FAIR) will be affected.

Wang joined Meta in June 2025 to strengthen the company’s AI profile and make it stand out in a highly competitive market where other tech giants like Google and Open AI are also pouring in millions.

According to CNBC, several sources with inside information revealed that top-tier AI hires that were brought into the company this summer and the employees within TBD Labs will not be impacted by the cuts.

They added that this is also an attempt by Meta to solidify the leadership of Wang and expand his influence over Meta’s broader AI strategy.

Within the company, the AI unit of Meta was considered “oversized” and “bloated”. Therefore, the company is looking to reduce layers, trim the department and operate more efficiently.

The tech giant has sent some employees on a “non-working notice period” and set November 21 as their last working day.

After the layoffs, the workforce at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs’ has reduced to under 3,000 people.
