Spotify adds test messaging to its AI DJ feature

Spotify officially upgraded its AI DJ feature on Wednesday, allowing Premium subscribers to make requests using text input in addition to voice commands.

The AI DJ feature was primarily updated earlier this year to accept voice requests, instead of only playing tunes Spotify algorithm recommended.

However, that feature was only available to the English-language AI DJ until today.

The new feature works with both English and Spanish requests as Spotify’s Spanish language DJ called DJ Livi now accepts music requests.

The increasing popularity of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini has made it quite common to text with an AI assistant.

These services called for various potential benefits, including multi-modal inputs: users can either talk, text or upload images and files as part of their request.

While more people have been alternating between input methods, Apple has also rolled out a version of its Siri assistant that can also be reached by text.

Spotify’s AI feature which accepts text input allows users to engage with streaming service when commuting or in a silent space where they don't want to annoy others by issuing voice commands.

The new texting feature further allows the AI DJ to offer tailored prompts to help inspire you if one is not sure what to listen next in the session.

How to enable the DJ on Spotify

To consider the option for DJ, simply search for the term “DJ” on Spotify and then press play to start your expertly curated mix.

If you want to change the music, just tap the DJ button in the bottom-right of the screen and then offer your suggestion through voice or text.

Spotify’s AI DJ is a significant new feature that enhances user control and interactivity, and can handle requests that combine genre, mood and activity where voice commands are not practical.

The feature is currently active in English and Spanish in over 60 markets worldwide.
