US repeals visas of over 50 Mexican politicians in new drug war crackdown

The US administration has revoked the visas of over 5o Mexican government officials in the midst of a crackdown on drug cartels.

As reported by Reuters, the recent movie is part of the Trump administration's efforts to achieve policy goals in eliminating drug mafia from the US soil.

According to three former US ambassadors, previous governments have also adopted this approach of revoking visas.

Tony Wayne, U.S. ambassador to Mexico from 2011 to 2015 said, "The Trump administration is finding new ways to exert more pressure on Mexico.”

The recent move has unsettled Mexico’s elite community who rely on US visas for frequent traveling. It also represents the escalation of US anti-narcotics actions.

The names of Mexican officials whose visas have been revoked have not been disclosed yet.

Only four officials till now have confirmed the revocation of their visas, including Baja California state Governor Marina del Pilar Avila.

While responding to Reuters, a senior US State Department official said, “Visas, including those held by foreign officials, may be revoked at any time for activities that run contrary to America's national interest."

"The Trump administration has had a good working relationship with the Sheinbaum government, and we look forward to continuing to advance our bilateral relationship in the interest of the America first foreign policy agenda," the official added.

The Mexican government and foreign ministry has not yet commented on the US recent move.
