'Monster: The Ed Gein Story' star claps back at haters

Charlie Hunnam has played a key role in Netflix’s latest released series titled Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

The show is based on real life convicted murderer, serial killer and graverobber, Ed Gein.

Ever since, it has been released, the series has become a part of controversy with critics calling it “depraved”.

The lead star seems quite discontented with the reviews the show has been receiving and he has finally responded to the backlash.

In a recent interview, Charlie stated, "I never felt like we were sensationalizing it.”

According to him, while he was making the show, he did not feel that it was being made for "shock impact". Rather, the makers aimed at telling the story as honestly as they could.

He also implied that the show poses questions around fault.

Hunnam explained that the horror series raises concerning question like, "Is it Ed Gein who was abused and left in isolation and suffering from undiagnosed mental illness and went and that manifested in some pretty horrendous ways?”

“Or was the monster the legion of filmmakers that took inspiration from his life and sensationalised it to make entertainment and darken the American psyche in the process?" he asked.

He continued, "Is Ed Gein the monster of this show, or is Hitchcock the monster of the show? Or are we the monster of the show because we’re watching it?"

Monster is created by Ryan Murphy, who previously made projects namely Menendez Brothers and Jeffrey Dahmer.
