'La Piovra' star Remo Girone dies at 76

Remo Girone, who is famous for his iconic roles in La Piovra and Ford v Ferrari, has passed away at the age of 76.

The actor, who played mob boss on the classic Italian mafia TV series, breathed his last on Friday, October 3.

He died at his home in Monte Carlo after succumbing to bladder cancer, as per La Repubblica newspaper reported.

In addition to his character in La Piovra, Girone portrayed carmaker Enzo Ferrari in James Mangold’s 2019 sport action starring Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Josh Lucas, Jon Bernthal and more.

The late Italian actor is also widely known for his role as another mafia kingpin, Maso Pescatore, in the Ybor City-set period crime drama Live by Night (2016), written, directed and starring Ben Affleck.

He was also a part of The Equalizer 3 (2023) as he was landed a role of a doctor who aids Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall in Altamonte, Italy.

Born in Eritrea in East Africa to Italian parents on December 1, 1948, Girone received lifetime achievement awards from the Venice International Film Festival and Flaiano Film Festival in 2021.

Following the legendary actor’s death survivors include his wife, actress Victoria Zinny, whom he married in 1982, and his stepchildren, Veronica and Karl.
